When AI makes everyone look good on paper, what makes you stand out?
Applying for jobs has never been easier.
AI helps us improve our wording, tailor a CV to a specific position, write a cover letter, prepare for an interview or polish a LinkedIn profile. Within seconds, a rather ordinary sentence can suddenly sound professional and convincing.
And there is nothing wrong with that. AI has become a valuable tool in the job search, and I believe we should learn how to use it well. But there is another side to it.
If everyone has access to the same tools and everyone can create a polished application, what actually makes one person stand out from another?
AI is making job applications easier to produce, but at the same time harder for employers to distinguish. Candidates are applying for more jobs and increasingly using AI to tailor their applications. As a result, a growing number of applications look good on paper. But looking good on paper and being the right person for a role are still two very different things.
Your CV can only be the door opener. The main question remains: What is there behind the polished profile?
Because once you enter a conversation, whether through networking or an interview, the words on the page are no longer enough. People meet you. They want to hear your story, understand how you think and how you communicate. They notice whether you can explain what you have done and why it matters. They get a sense of your judgement, your curiosity, your energy, how you relate to others and whether you are a good fit for the organisation and its culture.
And this is where differentiation becomes much more human: What really makes you different?
When I work with professionals on their positioning, understanding their personal differentiation is at the core of the process. In the good old language of personal branding, it is about knowing what really sets you apart.
What do you bring that another person with a similar CV and background may not bring?
Two people may have very similar qualifications on paper and yet bring a very different combination of strengths, experiences and personal qualities to a role.
So yes, AI can help you express your story. It cannot create it for you.
Creating your story starts with clarity that cannot simply be generated. It needs to come from understanding yourself: what matters to you, what you bring and where you want to go next. AI can help you find better words. It can help structure your experience and perhaps even show you connections you had not seen before. But you still need to know what is true for you.
And here I would like to remind you of something that has always mattered to us as human beings: relationships
As employers receive more polished and increasingly similar applications, personal recommendations and professional relationships appear to be gaining importance again. The World Economic Forum recently referred to this as the “return of the referral.”
This is, of course, nothing new. But it may become even more relevant at a time when so many applications look equally polished.
A recommendation from someone who has actually worked with you tells an employer something that no perfectly written CV can. It says: I know this person. I have experienced how they work. I trust them.
This is also why I prefer to speak about taking care of your professional relationships rather than simply “networking.” And this should not begin only when you suddenly need a job. Your professional relationships are built over many years, through conversations, collaboration, curiosity and staying connected with people. Relationships create something that AI cannot generate for us: real experience of one another.
Standing out still matters. In a world where AI can make almost everyone sound polished, standing out may become less about appearing more impressive and more about showing what is genuinely yours.
Not simply:
How can I appear more impressive?
But:
How clearly can I show who I am, what I bring and where I can make a meaningful contribution?
This is where the human difference becomes visible.
It requires clarity about the whole of who you are and what you bring.
And it requires the courage to present yourself as a real person, rather than as the polished and seemingly perfect candidate AI can help you create on paper.
AI will continue to change the way we search for jobs, recruit people and work. We should use it and learn from it, but use it wisely, without losing our human touch.
But one of the most important questions for our careers remains a very human one:
When many people look equally good on paper, what will make someone remember you?
Strong professional positioning starts from the inside out. If you would like to explore what truly differentiates you and how to make this visible in your next career step, let’s talk.
