“What Got You Here – Won’t Get You There”
This blog is inspired by the bestselling book of Marshall Goldsmith, one of the world’s best leadership coaches and leadership thinkers, "What Got You Here - Won't Get You There". In his book Marshall Goldsmith writes about the beliefs of successful leaders and how those same beliefs hold them back from moving forward and reaching the next level of their success. In my opinion this book is not only a must read for leaders, but also for anyone else who wants to better understand how certain belief and behaviour patterns can prevent progress and can hinder the ability to reach the next level of success.
Now let’s translate Marshall’s thinking into the professional new orientation and career transition world. Having worked with hundreds of professionals as a career and executive coach for many years now, I have seen so many people who want to build their future career paths on the basis of ‘what got them here – will get them there’. They incorporate beliefs such as:
It has always worked for me this way. It will also do so in the future.
This is what I know best, so the future has to be built on this basis.
I have never had to apply for jobs. Jobs have always been referred to me. I believe it will be the same in the future.
Social media has never been an option for me and will not be in the future.
I have always relied only on my very close network and I will continue this way – networking is useless.
Self-Branding has never been a topic for me and will not be in the future.
And so on...
The fact is that the world of work post-Corona has and will bring a lot of challenges such as the elimination of countless jobs, an oversupply of work force and a lack of job opportunities in certain industries. Accelerated digitalisation will continue to have an impact on the way we work, communicate, connect and create.
But the fact is also that the world of work post-Corona will bring countless different opportunities and possibilities and will allow creativity, thinking outside the box and courage to thrive.
And yes the fact is also that in the world of work post-Corona “what got us here in our work and career – won’t get us there and further”. Our skills, work experience, behaviour, mindset, communication style, the known and the familiar will not be enough to get us there.
So what should we do? Well one thing is certain that fear, losing confidence and waiting for things to happen or to get better is a NO-GO if you want to get there and further. Here are ten, more than ever relevant, tips on how to get there.
1. Take the courage and act now.
2. Take charge to create and drive your own professional future.
3. Let go of the experiences of the past, that no longer serve.
4. Consider ‘skilling, upskilling and reskilling’ as a must.
5. Observe the trends and plan accordingly for the future.
6. Focus on what is possible versus what is not possible.
7. Be curious and explore.
8. Use the power of your emotional intelligence such as self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy and social skills.
9. Discover your potential.
10. Continue to build your courage and confidence muscles.
