I recently came across a quote by Edmond de Rothschild: “We don’t speculate on the future. We build it.”

This mindset struck me — not just in the world of investments, but in how it applies to the future of work.

Every day, we navigate between two approaches: speculating about the future vs. building the future

Speculation feels safe — But Is It Enough?

For decades, work was seen as something stable. A "job for life" was the norm. It's no surprise that mindsets like:

“Let’s see what opportunities come up…”

“Maybe next year things will change…”

...were common.

Speculation can offer comfort in uncertain times. But in today’s fast-moving world, waiting and hoping has become a risky strategy. The future of work demands more building than speculating. While it’s useful to reflect and anticipate how trends like AI or automation might reshape industries, thinking alone won’t create results.

The future belongs to those who build — those who take action, adapt, and lead their own path.

It’s about:

Knowing our strengths and motivations

Staying informed and connected

Acting without waiting for permission

Integrating work and life dynamically

Speculation isn’t wrong. But relying only on it means handing over control.

Building means:

Taking initiative

Making informed decisions

Creating opportunities

While speculation often means:

Waiting

Reacting

Hoping
