Take the courage to “fly and look at the world from a different perspective from time to time…”

I count myself very fortunate to have been able to take part in the TEDxZurich at the beginning of November this year. In my opinion this event was an amazing platform, not only because of the courageous people who presented their forward and impactful ideas on stage, but also because it provided an opportunity to get to know a number of other forward thinking people who also had great ideas, even if they chose not to get up on stage to present them. I highly recommend that you take part in one of these events.

There are many ideas that I consider worth sharing from the event: “Negotiation engineering”, “Power of vice”, “The right and the wrong way to look at the war in Syria”, “Dignity of plants” and many more, but there was one special “Ted Talk”, played in one of the breaks while the stage was being prepared for a musical performance, that particularly stood out for me. One of the most moving TED talks I have heard so far: The journey across the high wire of Philippe Petit, a French magician, street juggler, visual artist, writer and tightrope artist. Philippe Petit made a name for himself with his high wire walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York in 1974.

In his TED talk of 2012, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3zZVQPaKKQ) Philippe Petit shares how he learned card tricks at the age of six and how he started to learn the art of high wire walking and also about his breath taking experiences. During this “talk” or, more accurately, short “living story” he explains to us how he has been able to achieve the impossible.

It all starts with his PASSION, the driving force behind all his actions. He moves forward with TENACITY, his INTUITION teaches him to do the right thing, his FAITH replaces all doubt, his IMPROVISATION empowers him and his INSPIRATION inspires others.

I decided to examine the inspiration aspect and look at it from a new orientation point of view. For a large number of job seekers missing the work they love, giving up too soon, not trusting their intuition, neglecting their faith, giving no room, or little room for improvisation and inspiration are the obstacles to moving forward. If I may add one more thing to this list, it would be their lack of courage.

Given PASSION, TENACITY, INTUITION, FAITH, IMPROVISATION, INSPIRATION and COURAGE we are more than well equipped to overcome any challenges. Last, but not least, as Philippe Petit states at the end of his talk: “ …fly, look at the world from a different perspective and when you see mountains, remember mountains can be moved.”

So take the courage to fly and look at the world from a different perspective from time to time and don’t forget that mountains can be moved...Enjoy!
