Performance Review — Year-end courage and what remains
(Part 3 of 3)
In the first two blogs, I explored the performance review as a process of reflection and self-responsibility, starting with inner clarity and continuing into the performance conversation itself.
December has a different rhythm. The review conversations are over. Feedback has been given. Ratings are recorded. The forms are submitted. The year slows down. This is the right moment to ask a simple question:
What remains when the performance review is finalised?
When your inner reflection is clear, a performance review becomes a moment in time not a final judgment of your value or potential. You can engage with the system without letting it take over your self-perception.
The performance review conversation will end.
The form will be submitted.
What remains is how you integrate the outcome of the review into your own understanding of your development.
At year end, it can be helpful to return, once more, to the reflection-deepening questions introduced in the first blog, and to your own reflections that followed.
There is no pressure here.
No rating.
No comparison.
Only honesty and the opportunity to carry forward what truly matters.
Not all feedback needs to be carried forward. Some reflects circumstances more than reality. Some belongs to the system, not to you. Choose to let go of what does not belong to you.
Courage at year end means choosing what is useful and consciously leaving the rest behind.
Ask yourself:
What did I truly learn about myself this year?
This question also opens a different view on success.
Success is often measured individually by results, ratings, or recognition.
But work always affects others.
Who benefited from your growth this year?
Who felt supported by your way of working?
Who experienced more clarity, trust, or calm through your presence?
Looking at success this way changes how the year ends.
Now, the next step is usually the process of setting goals for the coming year. Before setting new goals, choose your direction. Not more. Not faster. But more aligned.
What courage will you need next year?
And where are you ready to practise it quietly, consistently, and in your own way
Performance reviews will return. Systems will stay, whether with your current employer or a future one.
What truly carries forward is your ability to reflect honestly, take responsibility for your growth, and stay connected to what matters to you.
That inner clarity is not measured on any form, and it may be the most valuable result you carry into the year ahead.
