My top 10 quotes on Vulnerability

Lately I have had a number of discussions with people about vulnerability and its impact on people’s careers especially those in a career transition. Showing vulnerability still seems to be seen as very challenging. It is very much related to being weak or coming from a weak position.

For me, vulnerability is as much a key for success as confidence. It is the other side of the coin. Coming from a vulnerable position enables us to achieve much more impact and to develop our confidence even more. Putting ourselves under pressure to be 100 % the right fit, to be the perfect candidate, to be the perfect business partner could make us “freeze” and prevent us from progressing and getting where we want to be. There are so many facets of vulnerability while moving forward in our career, such as showing emotions, asking for help, admitting that one is unable to do something or to not having certain competencies, forgiving mistakes, risking failure and so on.

I believe in what Brené Brown, the US story teller, author, research professional and public speaker says: “Courage to be imperfect and get vulnerable is the key for success in any area of life.” Get to know to Brené Brown’s view on vulnerability and watch her famous famous TEDx talk, which has been viewed by millions of people.

To inspire you not to neglect your “vulnerability” as you move forward, here are my top 10 quotes on vulnerability. They are all from Brené Brown my most favourite “voice” of vulnerability:

“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they are never weakness.”

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”

“You’re imperfect, and you’re wired for struggle, but you are worthy of love and belonging.”

“Vulnerability is about showing up and being seen. It’s tough to do that when we’re terrified about what people might see or think.”

“Vulnerability is basically uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure.”

“Vulnerability is not weakness. And that myth is profoundly dangerous.”

“What makes you vulnerable – makes you beautiful.”

“Owning our story can be hard, but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky, but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy – the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will be discover the infinite power of our light.”

“Perfectionism is a self destructive and addictive belief system that fuels this primary thought: If I look perfect, and do everything perfectly, I can avoid or minimize the painful feelings of shame, judgment, and blame.”

“We don’t have to do it all alone. We were never meant to.”

Take the courage to use the power of your vulnerability as a tool to enable yourself to move forward – it is indeed very powerful!
