What “they” could do better and what “we” could do better…

When people around us lose their jobs it also affects us, whether we want to admit it or not we tend to feel pity towards them and are afraid to bump into them in case either party feels awkward. These friends and colleagues want to make connections, they want referrals, they want to talk about their situation, they want be taken care of and they want someone to just listen to them. This can be more than a little challenging for all parties involved. In this situation we have to ask ourselves what can they do better and what can we do better?

They could:

Take the courage to step back and take a selective approach – with whom should they talk and with whom would it be better not to discuss their situation? What should they expect from any exchanges? They should not expect immediate referrals or for someone to circulate their CV. They should rather expect to meet people from a relevant network, to build up their own network, to listen, to learn, to seek, to get inspired, to digest information and use it to their benefit objectively.

We could:

Take the courage to share energy, motivation, inspiration, to be forward thinking, to provide encouragement, to share our own experiences, to listen, to take them seriously, to be honest and to show interest if we are really interested in them. Most of all we should avoid pity and ”fake“ emotions…
