What about your brand?
Your brand, your trademark, your label or what ever you chose to call it, is the way in which you portray your personal image to the outside world. The way in which you want to be seen or perceived as a person, as an expert in your field and as an indication for what you stand. YOU and everything connected with YOU make up the fundamental elements of your personal brand
Many people connect the question of brand to their job title and often to their employer e.g. I am a “xyz” at such and such an organisation. They are all best sellers of their employer’s brand. Their own brand is usually somewhere hidden away in a deep dark place, is yours too?
Establishing a personal brand is far more challenging than most people think. Self-branding is an art in itself. Here are some tips to help you to establish your personal brand:
Become more self-aware by means of in-depth reflection, examine your “entire self” and not just at a superficial level. Who are you? What are your strengths, competencies and skills, also your values, wishes, objectives, aversions, interests, convictions, habits and more?
Your self-confidence is key to strong self-branding. You are the driver of your brand.
What is your career objective and which branding strategy will help you to achieve it?
Your branding strategy is your presence and the image you build for yourself with all its related facets. Your appearance, from the way you dress, behave and communicate in any given situation e.g. the way in which you represent yourself in your CV, the way in which you apply for a job or project, your online presence, your elevator pitch, your networking, your first impression and more… Basically the entire range of your actions and interactions are key factors to successful branding.
“Create a strong brand and show that you can shine! Determine how you want to make your brand stand out by making use of all five senses: seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting.” Petra Wüst, the self-branding expert.
Also take note of what another self-branding expert, Simon Mainwaring says: The keys to brand success are self-definition, transparency, authenticity and accountability.
And most of all take the courage to make your self-branding concept work FOR and NOT against you in order to get what you want...
