The Great Resignation, could it also be about 'Great Mutual Encouragement’?
The Great Resignation. The Big Quit en masse. Beginning in early 2021, employees leaving their jobs in record numbers. According to a recent study by The Adecco Group “Resetting Normal: 2021” nearly two in five employees worldwide are already changing or considering new careers.
Why? Simply because the pandemic has allowed workers to re-evaluate their professional life, their careers, and their work conditions. Wage stagnation, long-lasting job dissatisfaction, lack of Work-Life-Balance etc. are possible contributory factors.
Now, how about looking at 'The Great Resignation' from a courage point of view? 'The Great Resignation' is an ACTION en masse. It is a movement with a ripple effect. I would say a ripple effect of encouragement.
A good number of these workers have had most probably already mentally resigned from their jobs a long time ago due to lack of career prospects, lack of recognition at work, lack of fair compensation etc., however many of them have held back for various reasons. Quitting their jobs without having an alternative option is usually out of the question for most people.
It seems like they needed a push to take the courage to move forward. In this case the pandemic served as that push to make them reconsider their situation and to finally mobilise the courage to take action. However, in my opinion, it is also about a collective undertaking and collective courage: If others can do it, then I can do it too, no matter what happens next. It is about drawing from the courage of others . It is about mutual encouragement. Mutual encouragement which leads to confidence and action of many at a global level.
As Brené Brown, the American research professor, lecturer and author says “Courage is contagious. Every time we choose courage, we make everyone around us a little better and the world a little braver.”
In the case of 'The Great Resignation' workers globally have chosen or are in the process of choosing to mobilise their courage, in doing so they are encouraging their fellow workers to be a little braver so that they can also reconsider, rethink, re-evaluate their work options and take action accordingly.
The Great Resignation – ‘Great Mutual Encouragement’ will hopefully lead us towards a better and braver world of work where employees will not need another pandemic to be able to choose courage over comfort, uncertainty and fear, to reflect about how work matters, to ask the relevant questions and to choose and act.
Often people tend to let their courage resources be crippled by fear and uncertainty. They tend to forget that getting into motion often only needs one small courageous step. One small step which will lead to a ripple effect enabling action and a forward motion.
