Take the courage to celebrate yourself...

Today’s world is a changing world and one of the things also subject to change is the way in which religious festivals, such as Christmas, are celebrated, valued and appreciated. In the past few weeks I have been observing people as they shop for their Christmas presents and have noted how individuals in my immediate surroundings are preparing themselves for the festive season. My observations have not been positive – they have shown me how hectic, rushed, stressed and irritated people become in the build up towards Christmas.

Conversations with friends and others around me have lead me to understand that Christmas time is taken as a “must” and is a specific date on the calendar that most of them no longer appreciate or look forward to celebrating. A growing number of people celebrate Christmas just for the sake of it or as a means of fulfilling family obligations, such as celebrating with grandparents, who still wish to come together to memorialize the festive season.

For me the festive season has also another aspect that many people choose to ignore. It can provide time for reflection, celebration and recognition of our achievements and successes. We can reflect on all the positive things we have done and the impact, whether good or bad, we have had during the past year. How about taking this time to appreciate yourself and celebrate what you have been able to achieve and how you have moved forward over the past twelve months? Take a close look at the challenges you have overcome and what you have learned from that process and share your stories with family members. What better time to give and receive recognition whilst giving and receiving material gifts? This could add something new to your Christmas experience and make the festive season even more worth celebrating.

Take the courage to celebrate yourself and your achievements throughout the festive season and put yourself in the right frame of mind to move forward in the New Year.

I wish you and your families and loved ones a very Merry Christmas or, perhaps I should say a very Merry “You-Celebration”…
