Job searching with ChatGPT: lessons learned and insights
This year, I asked my clients about their experiences using ChatGPT in their job searches and career transitions. How did it help them with CVs, motivation letters, interviews, and more? I also spent a lot of time testing ChatGPT myself to see how well it works. Here’s a summary of what we found: where ChatGPT does well, where it needs a human touch, and how you can make the most of it.
1. What ChatGPT does well:
Writing CVs and resumes: ChatGPT can structure and format CVs to look professional and tailored to a specific job. It highlights skills and experience clearly, making it easier for recruiters to notice what’s important.
Creating motivation letters: it can create focused and professional drafts of motivation letters that highlight relevant skills, align them with job requirements, and show enthusiasm.
Improving online profiles: it is very good at refining LinkedIn profiles and professional bios. It helps present individuals in a professional and engaging way that aligns with their career goals.
Providing Do’s and Don’ts: Unsure of what works in a CV or cover letter? ChatGPT offers tips on best practices, such as keeping a CV concise, avoiding unnecessary details, and tailoring applications to each job.
Preparing for interviews: ChatGPT can assist with interview preparation by simulating questions and providing sample answers. It also offers insights into company values and industry trends to ensure thorough preparation.
2. Where ChatGPT Falls Short
While ChatGPT is a great tool, it’s not perfect. Here’s where your input is still essential:
Reviewing and editing: ChatGPT sometimes repeats ideas or uses generic language. You’ll need to review its output to ensure it is polished and relevant to your goals.
Adding your personality: a CV or motivation letter should reflect your unique story. While ChatGPT provides a solid foundation, it’s up to you to add personal touches, specific achievements, and your voice.
Checking accuracy: while ChatGPT tries to be accurate, it can include outdated or incorrect information. Always double-check details about companies, industries, or roles.
Adapting to context: ChatGPT’s tone or style might not suit every job or industry. Tailor the language and content to match the specific audience or culture you’re targeting.
3. How to use ChatGPT effectively
Be clear in your instructions: the more specific you are, the better the results. For example, instead of saying, “write a CV,” ask, “write a CV for a junior data analyst with 2 years of experience in Python and SQL.”
Iterate and refine: ChatGPT’s first draft might not be perfect. Ask it to revise, rephrase, or adjust sections until you’re satisfied.
Get a second opinion: after using ChatGPT, share your CV or letter with a trusted friend, mentor, or coach. They can catch errors or suggest improvements that you might miss.
4. A few fun observations
The buzzword overload: ChatGPT loves buzzwords like “innovative solutions” and “synergized teams.” While these can sound impressive, too many can make your application feel overly corporate. Use them selectively.
The “perfect candidate” syndrome: ChatGPT tends to present individuals as flawless. Remember, authenticity and demonstrating growth are just as important to employers as a polished CV.
So yes, ChatGPT is a valuable tool for job seekers and career changers. It saves time, reduces stress, and creates strong drafts for CVs, cover letters, and interview preparation. However, it is just that a tool. The real impact comes from reviewing, personalising, and refining its output to reflect unique strengths and goals.
And as a career coach, I’m excited about tools like ChatGPT. They allow me to focus on the parts of my role that create real value for my clients: helping them build sustainable, fulfilling career paths and giving them the confidence to take bold steps. By automating the basics, ChatGPT gives me more time to guide my clients in thinking strategically, acting courageously, and building careers they love.
So, go ahead - use ChatGPT to get started, but remember, you’re the one who brings the heart and story that will truly make an impact!
