Year-end reflection: which walkways did you choose this year?
Lately, I visited a modern ballet at the Zurich Opera House titled 'Walkways.' It was a beautiful performance with amazing ballet dancers presenting ballet in a fresh and bold way. In this performance, 'Walkways' focuses on the simple act of walking or moving from one place to another.
As a career and executive coach, I couldn't help but see the connections between the ballet's theme and the world of careers. In our professional journeys, we navigate our own walkways moving from one place to another, aiming for progress, success, happiness, and fulfilment. These walkways represent opportunities for growth, choices, and progress.
Like the ballet dancers who adapt and explore new steps, successful professionals understand the importance of continuous progress. They adjust, learn, and grow, always exploring new walkways for their success.
A common obstacle that holds professionals back in their careers is getting stuck. Stagnation happens when we firmly stick to familiar routines and resist change. Relying only on established principles without adaptability leads easily to stagnation.
There are many ways to deal with stagnation, but most importantly, setting clear and bold goals, taking calculated risks, stepping outside of your comfort zone, embracing change, lifelong learning, and actively seeking feedback are valid initiatives to get going.
In today's world of work, career paths can no longer be rigid; they must include dynamic opportunities for growth. Embracing change, overcoming stagnation, and moving forward courageously are more critical than ever.
As the year-end approaches, it's a great time to reflect on the walkways you've chosen this year. Which walkways of exploration, testing, and growth have you perceived? How did you navigate them, moving from one point to another? Were there any walkways you hesitated to explore? If so, what held you back? Was it a lack of courage, determination, support, or something else? Feel free to share your thoughts and experiences in the comments.
Wishing you a courageous reflection and a meaningful closure of the year.
